medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've been to all four of these churches. Definitely, there are no external flying buttresses, but I was under the impression that at least the Franziskanerkirche
had internal flying buttresses similar to those at Durham. . . same with the Muenchener Frauenkirche. I can't recall exactly the situation at Nuernberg . . . I
seem to recall the ambulatory vaults being the same height as that in the nave (unless I have it conflated with a different church in the city). . . Could the
construction in the side aisles be considered a form of internal flying buttress?
As for Schwabish-Gemuend, I have only the vaguest recollection since I was there only briefly during a very long day of hiking and was not exactly paying
much attention. . .
George (very curious)
