Dear All,
The West Midlands Hub Museum’s 2007-8 education programme has a focus on
supporting museums to reach out to teachers. Your museum may be interested
in contacting your local school, schools that just never seem to book or
talking to teachers about how museum education services can respond to
changing school agendas and priorities. To support this kind of work the
West Midlands Museums Hub has organised a series of five training sessions
in October and November to support museums to develop the knowledge and
skills involved in different types of teacher consultation.
You can choose to book onto one or all of the following free sessions:
SESSION 1: How to develop museum education resources in-line with how
children learn
- Friday 12th October 2007 at The New Art Gallery, Walsall
- Aimed at small and voluntary and museums who are thinking about
developing their museum education services (or early career staff)
This session focuses on the fundamentals of developing museum education
resources and includes:
- How children learn in the museum – the basics of learning theory and
museum pedagogy
- How to write an activity sheet
- How to create a handling box
- How to create a teachers pack
SESSION 2: How to develop your museum education provision
- Monday 29th October 2007 at The Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, Coventry
- Aimed at small and voluntary run museums who are thinking about
developing their museum education services (or early career staff)
This session focuses on the fundamentals of how museums can respond to the
needs of the curriculum and of teachers and includes:
- The national curriculum and QCA schemes of work – how do they apply to
museums?
- How to develop a successful museum education service in consultation
with teachers
- What do teachers want? Views from an experienced teacher
- The new cross-curricular approach in the proposed changes to the
national curriculum – how this can work to your advantage
- Focusing on the strengths of your collection – how to develop an
activity session focused on the curriculum
SESSION 3: How to develop, advertise and deliver a successful INSET
session for teachers
- Friday 23rd November 2007 at Gladstone Pottery Museum, Stoke-on-Trent
- Aimed at: all museums
This session focuses on how museums can attract new bookings by responding
to teachers’ training needs and includes:
- How to plan an INSET – how to get teachers to turn up to teacher
training events!
- Marketing your INSET – multiple ways to spread the word
- Using the new West Midlands Hub teachers' pack as resources in your INSET
- Tips on smooth running of INSETs
SESSION 4: Key priorities for teachers – current issues that are important
to teachers
- Monday 19th November 2007 at RAF Museum, Cosford
- Aimed at: museums who are responding to more advanced curriculum issues
This session will look at some of the priorities that are currently
important to teachers and includes:
- How can museums effectively support the citizenship agenda?
- More than just art activities - how can museums inspire creativity?
- The extended schools agenda – how can museums respond?
- Going green - the sustainable and eco-schools agenda
- The new QCA schemes of work for Key Stage 2 (history) and Key Stage 3
- Creative links to the curriculum – how museums think outside
curriculum ‘boxes’
SESSION 5: Emerging priorities for teachers – current planning issues for
teachers
- Monday 26th November 2007 at the Tudor House, Worcester
- Aimed at: museums who are responding to more advanced curriculum issues
This session will focus on the agendas that are increasing in priority or
are just coming over the horizon and includes:
- Why the “Every Child Matters” agenda is now so central to teachers’
planning and why museums need to understand it
- The development of the personalised learning agenda
- Why the new emphasis on cross-curricular learning in the new curriculum
is a bonus for museums
- The thinking skills agenda – why is it back in vogue and how can museums
respond?
