Many (most?) academic queries are subject-based, and discovery services
which concentrate only on one type of materials will probably find it
difficult to attract significant practical usage.
The PerX Pilot http://www.engineering.ac.uk/index.html?action=basic is
an example of a subject-based Cross Search Demonstrator, and it
cross-searches ePrints along with as many other relevant interoperable
sources as we've so far managed to collect.
