Here in Canada we have been running a centralized search service for
Canadian IRs at http://carl-abrc-oai.lib.sfu.ca/ . It is using the PKP
Metadata OAI Harvester software (http://pkp.sfu.ca/harvester). We have
not yet moved to the latest version of this software, which is much
better than the original.
Consistency of metadata is a real issue with searching using metadata
harvested via OAI. In order to address this issue, we are in the process
of developing an application profile for contributed metadata, based in
part on the UK ePrints profile. A presentation on this activity, from a
year ago, is available at
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/obj/014005/f2/014005-05209-j1-e.pdf
(article based on this work is forthcoming in Library Hi Tech). We are
on track to release the first public draft of the AP at a conference
(http://www.carl-abrc.ca/projects/institutional_repositories/access_preconf_registration2006-e.html)
in October.
