medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. August) is the feast day of:
Euplus (d. 304) Euplus is one of those guys who courted martyrdom,
going and shouting outside the governor's court at Catania "I am a
Christian and willing to die for it." So he was brought in,
interrogated, tortured, and decapitated.
Lelia (6th cent.?) An obscure saint of the diocese of Limerick,
included here because there's a dearth of medieval saints today. She
may have been an abbess in the province of Munster. She gave her
name to Killeely (Cill Liadaini).
Porcarius and companions (d. c. 732) A rather legendary account
tells that Porcarius was abbot of Lerins. In c. 732 an angel flew in
with warning that Muslim raiders were on their way. The abbot
started evacuating his island monastery, but there were only enough
boats for the boys being educated at Lerins and 36 of the younger
monks. The remaining 500 monks, ears ringing with P's exhorations to
suffer bravely, were all killed except four (who were taken as
slaves).
