medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (2. August) is the feast day of:
Eusebius of Vercelli (d. 371) The Sardinian Eusebius was raised in
Rome after his father was martyred. He became bishop of Vercelli.
He became involved in church affairs beyond his diocese, though: in
354 Pope Liberius sent him to persuade Emperor Constantius to call a
council to stop the Catholic/Arian dispute. This backfired, as the
council decided in favor of the Arians. E. refused to sign the
council's condemnation of Athanasius and ended up banished to very
uncomfortable conditions in Scythopolis, where the dominant Arian
population stopped at little in their efforts to make him conform.
Allowed to return to his see by Julian in 361, E. instead travelled
around the east arguing with Arians.
Syagrius (d. 600) The Gallo-Roman Syagrius became bishop of Autun in
c. 560. He was an influential figure, but is best known today for
failing to settle a dispute at the convent of the Holy Cross in
Poitiers.
Joan of Aza (blessed) (d. c. 1190). St. Dominic's mom. Joan
(Juana?) had four children. When the first two were already grown
up, J. prayed for another son at the monastery of Silos---she had a
vision of Dominic of Silos promising a child; the kid was baptized
with the saint's name in honor of the event. She also had the
uncomfortable dream, when pregnant, that a dog with a burning torch
in its mouth was in her womb. Her cult seems to have begun soon
after her death, and was confirmed in 1828.
Thomas of Dover (d. 1295) Thomas of Hales was a Benedictine monk of
Dover. When the French raided Dover in 1295, all the monks fled
except Thomas, an old man who had been taking a nap. The raiders
demanded that he tell them where the monastery's treasure was hidden,
he refused, and they killed him. Miracles were reported at his tomb
and Richard II asked the papacy to canonize T. A process was begun
in 1380-2, but never completed.
