medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. August) is the feast day of:
Pontian and Hippolytus (d. c. 236) Hippolytus was a theologian and
preacher of Rome. He was elected (anti)pope in a split election and
had a long fight with his rival candidate Pope Callixtus and several
of his successors, including Pontian, who was elected in c. 230.
Both were arrested in a persecution and deported to Sardinia, where
they died from ill treatment. Pope Fabian a few years later had the
remains of both returned to Rome.
Radegunde (d. 587) Radegunde was a Thuringian princess, captured by
invading Franks in c. 531. She married the Neustrian Clothar I, but
fled the court when her husband murdered her brother in c. 550. She
became a nun and eventually founded a convent near Poitiers, from
which she played a very active political and religious role.
Maximus the Confessor (d. 662) Maximus was a Byzantine aristocrat
who served as imperial secretary before becoming a monk. He was a
champion of orthodoxy against monothelitism. This got him into a lot
of trouble with the emperor. He was exiled, he was tortured, his
tongue and right hand were cut off, etc. He finally died in exile
again on the Black Sea.
Wigbert (d. c. 745) The English Wigbert joined Boniface in Germany,
where W became abbot of Fritzlar and then Ohrdruf.
Gertrude of Altenberg (blessed) (d. 1297) The third daughter of St.
Elizabeth of Hungary, Gertrude was dedicated to God at birth and sent
off to the Premonstratensian convent at Altenberg when only two years
old. She became abbess at age 22. She prayed a lot, furthered the
feast of Corpus Christi, and was very austere.
