medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (15. October) is the feast day of:
Leonard of Vandoeuvre (d. c. 570) Leonard was a hermit at Vandoeuvre
near Le Mans (now St-Leonard-aux-Bois). Disciples started to gather
around him, and in time he founded a monastery at the site of his
hermitage. King Clothar I was his patron.
Thecla of Kitzingen (d. c. 790) Thecla was one of the nuns who went
with Lioba to aid Boniface with his missionary work. She became
abbess of Ochsenfurt and later of Kitzingen.
Euthymius the Younger (d. 898) Euthymius was a Galatian, a married
man who abandoned his family in 842 and became a monk on Mt. Olympus.
He soon became a hermit on Mt. Athos, spent time on a small island,
preached at Salonika. Eventually he responded to a dream by going to
Mt. Peristera and rebuilding a ruined monastery there. He attracted
a large number of disciples. He went on from there to build another
double monastery.
A modern saint: Teresa of Avila (d. 1582) The Castilian Teresa
became a Carmelite nun at Avila in 1536. In the 1550s she started to
have visions and to hear voices and got very serious about the
religious life. In 1562 she founded a convent at Avila for nuns who
wanted a more austere life---this was the beginning of the reformed
order of discalced Carmelites. Her reforming work took T. all over
Spain, but she still wrote many letters and some books that have
become spiritual classics. T. was canonized in 1622 and declared a
doctor of the church in 1970---the first woman admitted to that
particular men's club.
