medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. October) is the feast day of:
Quentin (d. 287) Quentin (or Quintinus) was a Roman who went to Gaul
as a missionary. He settled at Amiens but was so successful that he
caught the prefect's eye, was taken to Augusta Veromanduorum
(Saint-Quentin), tortured, and then beheaded.
Foillan (d. c. 655) Foillan was a brother of Sts. Fursey and Ultan.
The three went from their native Ireland to England in c. 630, where
they became missionaries among the EAst Angles. But after their
monastery was destroyed in war, Foillan and Ultan went to join
Fursey, who had already gone to the kingdom of the Franks. Foillan
founded a monastery at Fosses. He was a successful missionary,
except his teaching apparently had no appeal to a band of outlaws,
who murdered him and three companions.
Wolfgang of Regensburg (d. 994) Wolfgan was a Swabian, educated at
Reichenau, who latched on to a prestigious friend and followed him
when the latter became archbishop of Trier in 956 and became a
teacher in the cathedral school there. When the friend died,
Wolfgang became a monk at Einsiedeln, in 972 being appointed bishop
of Regensburg. W. reformed the clergy and monasteries, preached a
lot, and even tutored Duke Henry of Bavaria's son, who later became
Emperor Henry II. W. was canonized in 1052.
