medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Could anyone please shed some light on Ss Protasus and Gervaise and the
location where their relics were discovered. The only information I have
is the following :
The visual impact of these burials is so considerable that two red-ochred
skeletons, presumably of this age, found under a church in northern Italy,
were identified as Christian martyrs. Thus recognised, their relics were
believed to have restored sight to a blind man and to have driven out
demons from others and, in consequence, the pair became canonised as Saint
Protasus and Saint Gervaise. [Bradley, R. 2002. The Past in Prehistoric
Societies. London: Routledge. p112]
