medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Wyn:
The primary relics of SS Gervase and Protase were discovered by St
Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, their location having been revealed to him in a
vision. The discovery could not have been timed better: it was the eve of
the dedication of the great basilica of Milan in 386. G. and P. were
regarded as protomartyrs of Milan but their burial-place had been
forgotten. They were found in the cemeterial church of SS Nabor and Felix
from which they were brought in solemn procession into the new basilica.
And, as you say, miracles were reported by eye-witnesses to the event.
Their Acts have survived but are not considered historically
reliable.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Martin
