To add to Paul's note the UN has just released its 2004 Population data
sheet for all the countries in the World

The UN estimates the UK population to be 59.7 million in 2004 and
estimates that the population will increase to 64 million by 2025 and
65.4 million by 2050 - a population increase of less than 10 percent
over 45 years does not seem unsustainable, unmanageable or undesirable
to me!
