Volunteer Placement for Half-term activities

The Royal Armouries Museum runs a busy half-term programme based in the White Tower, the Norman castle at the centre of the Tower of London site. In October half-term we worked directly with nearly 12,000 children and adults in a variety of activities from live interpretation performances to brass rubbing.
We are currently recruiting for the February 2005 half-term. There was a great deal of competition for placements in October, therefore please read the placement description and person specification very carefully before applying.
Placement description:
Working as part of a team, volunteers will work in the exhibition, "Hands on History" located on the top floor of the White Tower. The exhibition charts the history of an education service at the Tower and has been designed for children and families. There will be a number of interactive zones which will be supervised throughout half term.
The placement is offered at a minimum of 3 days. However, we are ideally seeking people who can volunteer for 5-7 days.
Volunteer duties will include a rota of:
* greeting family audiences
* supervising brass-rubbing for children
* armour activity with small groups
* assisting visitors with simple construction acitivities (making a Norman arch etc)
* preparation of materials
Person specification:
* Team player
* Ability to use initiative
* Flexibility
* Capable of working under pressure (the activity zones will be very busy!)
* Proven track record in working with children and young people
* Personal interest in British history
* Excellent spoken English
* Knowledge of another language (such as French, German, Japanese etc) would be beneficial

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the listed scheduled monument nature of the C11th White Tower there are access limitations to the building. The floor is reached by spiral stairs and not accessible for wheelchair users. However, we would be delighted to develop a bespoke placement for any successful candidate who would find the White Tower inaccessible.
