Hello,
Following last weeks flurry of e-mails about in-school sessions...
At the Shipley, we've started experimenting with schools outreach sessions. At
the moment this is in the development phase and we have only offered it as an
alternative to schools who wanted to book in during exhibition change overs.
During the summer I acquired a collection of handling objects to aid the
interpretation of our contemporary craft collection. This has been reasonably
successful, so I ran the in-schools sessions mainly based around these handling
objects. So far I've done schools outreach sessions based around
Characteristics of Materials (Science Units 1c & 2d), Containers (Art&Design
Unit5b). Both of these are variations on what we would normally do in the
gallery. The sessions were okay but they're still being worked on. I've also
given a lecture in a couple of schools, 'Materials and their applications',
which ties in with the Advancing Physics A-Level curriculum.
At the moment our plan is to try and limit the availability of these sessions
to those periods when we can't get into the gallery. We've not yet reached any
conclusions regarding whether we should offer this on a more regular basis to
schools who find it difficult to reach us. The LEA were situated in covers
quite a wide area and encompasses some isolated rural schools. One of the
reasons for our hesitation is the cost associated with getting out to the
schools since we don't charge for the sessions. I'll probably continue to go
out to give the lecture as and when its requested because of the difficulty the
teachers face in organising trips out and because the number of schools
requesting it isn't likely to be very high (there are only 8 schools/colleges
in the region which use that curriculum).
I would be interested in hearing from other people who have run sessions in the
classroom and how they structure the activities etc...
