I don't think outreach sessions prove that museums don't need buildings - on
a very basic level you could describe museums as the storage places for the
objects you might take on outreach sessions (although I think they're more
than that) - you need somewhere to put them!!! And yes, museums do need
objects as well as ideas, because that's one of the things that makes them
special. I've just run an archaeology workshop (in-house, not outreach) and
the kids were excited because they got to see and handle things they
wouldn't normally get near to.
Feel free to pass on this information to anyone in involved in a
cost-cutting exercise (eg the local council) and therefore has the bright
idea, "ooooh, let's go for the museums and exhibition spaces because they're
useless anyway..."
