Migration education resource pack
Background
The British Empire & Commonwealth Museum is developing a schoolΉs resource
pack to accompany a television series and an exhibition around the theme of
migration particularly as it relates to stories of empire and the south
west.
A freelancer is sought to develop the content of this pack, write teaching
materials and trial and evaluate them with schools.
The pack will be aimed at key stage 2 and 3 history and citizenship,
particularly supporting HISTORY KS3 QCA Unit 14 / KS2 Unit 13; CITIZENSHIP
KS3 Unit 4 / KS2 Unit 5.
Testimony Films have been commissioned by HTV to produce a six part
television series Hope and GloryΉ due for transmission in January 2004. A
small exhibition will run at the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum
related to the programme and including artefacts from January March 2004.
The series will focus on personal narratives of people who came to or left
the West Country under the following programme themes:
Programme 1 An Empire Childhood
Children separated from their parents, whether through poverty or
privilege
Programme 2 Marriage
Love and marriage at home and abroad
Programme 3 War
South West veterans who fought in civil conflicts in Commonwealth
countries
Programme 4 Refugees
People who fled to Britain
Programme 5 Ten Pound Poms
Searching for a better life in the Commonwealth
Programme 6 Local Heroes
Success against the odds
Content
The education resource pack will include a VHS of selected extracts from the
television series as well as additional oral history material on a CD-Rom
and photographic and other archive or documentary source material. The pack
will need to support the Museum exhibition, and any accompanying educational
workshops, as well as standing alone as a useful teaching resource.
The consultant will need to develop the component parts of the pack,
research any additional background material, include curriculum links, write
educational materials for teachers and pupils, trial and evaluate them, edit
and proof read final copy and liase with designers (including art
direction).
A section of the pack will draw comparisons and relevance between the
history of migration and issues affecting modern day refugees and asylum
seekers.
A requirement will be to research other educational materials on the market
around the theme of migration to ensure the pack is complimentary to other
resources.
The materials will also need to be formatted to be made available through
the Museum website.
Person specification
Essential skills:
A track record of successful writing for publication
Recent knowledge of school curriculum requirements at key stage 2 and 3 in
history and citizenship
Proven ability to write in a lively, accessible way for the target
audiences (teachers and pupils)
Experience in researching and synthesising material and extracting key
factors
Ability to select images and understand their historical and contemporary
uses
Experience in trialling and evaluating school materials
Ability to structure documents in a coherent and logical manner
Ability to meet deadlines
Well developed oral communication and negotiation skills
Desirable:
Experience of working with a commissioning editor, designers and
publishers
Payment and timescales
A fixed fee of £2000 will be paid for the work, paid in installments against
deliverable milestones. The timescales are to start work in September 2003
with the pack published and ready for distribution by December 15th 2003.
