The North East Region faces some of the toughest challenges in tackling low
literacy and numercay skills amongst the adult population. The Local Learning &
Skills Councils are tasked with addressing these issues and wish to involve the
library, museum and archive sector. In addition, the Regional Basic Skills
Taskforce has also highlighted two areas of urgent need: to increase and
improve capacity, and to raise demand.
As a result of the need to increase the sector's capacity for supporting adult
learners, NEMLAC is in the process of delivering a series of Basic Skills
Awareness Sessions to library, museum and archive staff/volunteers across the
region. (Six sessions have already been delivered in the Tees Valley and in
Newcastle to over 100 members of staff)
Each session focuses on Working in the Sector and Supporting Learners. This
includes an overview of the National Strategy, Skills for Life, as well as
looking at Basic Skills in context - the impact of poor Basic Skills, everyday
literacy, language and numeracy skills, barriers to learning and strategies to
overcome barriers.
The training has been specially tailored for our sector, with Basic Skills
tutors from County Durham LEA delivering the two sessions. (Staff only need to
attend one of the sessions)
Please contact Steven Hughes, Basic Skills Officer at NEMLAC, if you require
any more details.
