Dear Colleagues
We are very pleased to write with news of the first international conference
organised by the Centre for Museology COLLECTIONS, CULTURES, CHANGE which
takes place at the University of Manchester, 7th-9th November 2003.
COLLECTIONS, CULTURES, CHANGE is about the intellectual, ethical, political
and practical dimensions of collections and collecting in the contemporary
museum.
Curators, critics, academics and artists from Europe and Britain will
contribute to this interdisciplinary debate, and will explore issues such
as:
· cultural change
· the history and future of the encyclopaedic museum
· the relationships between museums and source communities
· the engagement between artists, collections and museums
· the idea of the reflexive museum, in theory and practice
The conference will bring together leading museum practitioners, academics
and artists from the UK, mainland Europe and Canada in a rich
interdisciplinary debate on the function of museum collections today.
Confirmed speakers include: Jette Sandahl, Tomislav Sola, Angela Volker,
Nick Merriman, Mary Bouquet, Tony Bennett, Spring Hurlbut, Louise Tythacott,
Laura Peers, Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings, and Thomas Dowson.
The programme has also been devised to allow plenty of time for delegates to
debate the issues raised in presentations and also by the new displays in
the Manchester Museum itself, which will form a kind of critical case study
for the conference.
The conference website is now live and accessible at:

Please contact us if you have any queries about the conference - we'd be
happy to hear from you!
With very best wishes,
Helen Rees Leahy
