UNDERSTANDING SLAVERY INITIATIVE
Greenwich
The Understanding Slavery Initiative is an innovative and significant formal learning project initiated by the National Maritime Museum and museum partners in Liverpool, Bristol and London. Funded by the Department for Education and Skills and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, it will build on existing work to support the Key Stage 2 and 3 History and Citizenship curricula, setting out to explain the history of slavery and its social, economic and cultural context to young people today - thus raising awareness of our heritage and exploring our shared responsibilities in the 21st Century.
We are looking for two highly motivated individuals to play a key role in taking this project forward:
Project Manager
Fixed term contract July 03 to March 04; equivalent of 3 days per week
£30,000 - £35,000 (pro rata) * Ref G/PM
You will be responsible for leading and co-ordinating the project across the three participating regions of Bristol, Liverpool and London. Reporting to a steering group, your key challenges will be to manage the work of project teams to ensure delivery of the project to agreed timescales, budgets and quality expectations while overseeing the commissioning of qualitative researchers, development of a dissemination strategy and preparing reports and recommendations for partners and government at relevant stages.
To be considered, you must be an energetic and inspirational leader with a proven track record in project management; probably gained in a cultural organisation with an emphasis on cultural diversity and involving qualitative research. An accomplished communicator and strategic thinker, you'll combine an awareness of formal learning needs with a creative approach to exploring a potentially sensitive historical issue.
Collection Interpretation Officer
6 month contract
£15,000 - £18,000 (pro rata) * Ref G/CIO
Selecting and conducting research on historical items to be used in the project, you will create interesting narratives and text for the gallery, catalogue and online learning resources. In short, you will bring these items to life and make them relevant for a young target audience within the context of the national curriculum.
To do this requires the skills of a dynamic and dedicated person with collection research experience in a relevant subject area. A gifted written and verbal communicator and dedicated team worker, you will bring an inclusive and creative approach to the theme of exploring cultural diversity.
For both roles, you must also be willing to travel to Bristol and Liverpool when necessary.
