medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. March) is the feast day of:
Innocent I (d. 417) Innocent was elected pope in 402. He worked actively
to secure Roman leadership within the Church, including an active defense
of John Chrysostom when he was driven from his see.
Paulus Aurelianus (d. c. 575) Paul was born in c.500 in Wales and was
raised by St. Illtyd. Then he and several companions traveled to Brittany,
where they founded several monasteries. From 530 on Paul was a missionary
bishop, with his headquarters in a place later named after
him---St-Pol-de-Leon.
Peter the Deacon (d. 605) (blessed) Peter was a friend and companion of
Gregory the Great for many years. Peter was born in c.535. When Gregory
became pope (590), he made Peter his deacon and personal emissary. Peter
was formally beatified in 1866.
Simeon the New Theologian (d. 1022) Simeon is one of the greatest
Byzantine authors and mystics. He was born in 949 and became a monk in
Constantinople, then from 981 on abbot of St. Mamas. As controversy over
Simeon's teaching developed, he abdicated from his office, and later was
banished, but soon rehabilitated (but he refused to return to
Constantinople).
Fina (Seraphina) (d. 1253) The subject of a popular cult, Fina was born in
San Gimignano (Tuscany) in 1238. Her biography is strongly overlaid with
legend; the child Fina is supposed to have lived a monastic life in her
parents' house, heroically enduring illness and suffering. She died at the
age of 15. Already venerated during her life, the cult took off after
Fina's death. There is a fine fresco cycle of her life in San Gimignano,
painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio (c. 1475).
Justina Francucci Bezzoli (blessed) (d. 1319) Justina was born in the
mid-13th century in Arezzo (Italy). She became a Benedictine nun at the
age of 13. After a few years in a convent she became a hermit; for the
last years of her life she was blind and returned to the convent again.
She was beatified in 1890.
