medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. March) is the feast day of:
Sophronios (d. 638) Sophronios, born in c. 560 in Damascus, was a monk and
important Christian writer. In 634 at the age of 74 he was elected
patriarch of Jerusalem. He survived the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem by
only a few weeks.
Vigilius of Auxerre (d. c. 685) Vigilius was elected bishop of Auxerre
(France) in c. 685. In c. 685 he was murdered. He is regarded as a
martyr.
Oengus the Culdee (d. c. 824) was a monk of the Irish celi de reform
("servants of God") movement. After a monastic education and several years
as a hermit, Oengus entered the monastery of Tallacht, where later
tradition reports that he eventually became abbot and bishop. Certainly he
was famous enough to rate mention in three annals, which list his death in
819, 824, or 830. Oengus is best known as the author of the first extant
Irish martyrology, a long poetic calendar of the most important Irish and
European saints. He devoted a stanza to each day of the year, thus
providing just enough information to begin imagining the saint of the day.
(My own endeavors are of course modelled on Oengus' work.)
Eulogius of Cordoba (d. 859) Eulogius was a priest of Cordoba (Spain)
during the series of confrontations with Muslim authorities that produced
the martyrs of Cordoba. He supported the martyrs. In 858 Eulogius was
named archbishop of Toledo but was unable to enter into his office, because
he himself was martyred in 859.
Cristofero Maccassoli (blessed) (d. 1485) Cristofero, born in Milan
sometime in the first half of the fifteenth century, became a Franciscan
friar and founded the reform convent of Vigevano near Lake Como. He was
beatified in 1890.
