Dear All
As some of you may already know, the nomination process for the 2002 Royal
Society Michael Faraday Award is open and you are invited to send in
nominations by the closing date of Thursday 31 January 2002. The Nomination
Form and Notes for Proposers can be accessed from:
www.royalsoc.ac.uk/royalsoc/faraday2002.htm
The Michael Faraday Award is made annually by the Council of the Royal
Society to encourage scientists to communicate their research interests
and/or scientific ideas in general to non-scientists. It is made to the
individual scientist who, in the opinion of the Council of the Royal
Society, has done most to further, in the United Kingdom, an understanding
of the role of science, engineering or technology in society.
Previous Faraday Award winners have included Lewis Wolpert, Robert Winston,
Susan Greenfield and Richard Dawkins.
The Award consists of a silver gilt medal and a prize of £2500 which are
presented by the President of the Royal Society on the occasion of the
annual Michael Faraday Award Lecture (the recipient of the Award is required
to give an agreed lecture as part of the Society's annual programme of
public events).
The 2001 Award has been made to Harry Kroto FRS, 1996 Nobel Prize winner for
chemistry and currently a research professor at the University of Sussex, in
recognition of the time and energy he has given to science communication.
Harry Kroto will deliver his Award Lecture entitled, Science, a round peg in
a square world, next Tuesday, 29 January at 5.30pm at the Royal Society.
