medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Another minor adjustment to the advice so far. First, if you're in Germany
and want the material in German, you might bypass the new translation
mentioned by other respondents and look at the older translation of all the
Francis material published in various languages in the 1960s and
thereafter. It appeared in English as St. Francis of Assisi: writings and
early biographies ca. 1973; in French as Saint Francois d'Assise: Documents
in 1968; and there's a German translation of it, too.
Second, Speculum perfectionis is indeed not by Leo and not what Rosalind
Brooke published in Scripta Leonis, but what she published there is really
more interesting than the Speculum perfectionis. It stands a good chance
of representing what Leo and other early companions were saying about
Francis in the 1240s and thereafter. So there you have your unofficial
account in an intriguing form.
