In answer to a House of Commons Parliamentary Question in 1999, Minister
Patricia Hewitt gave these figures for the total spend (in GBP million) by
UK Research Councils on PUSET:
1994/5 - 1.3, 95/96- 1.9, 96/7- 2.5; 97/8- 2.8; 98/9- 3.3; 99/00- 3.7
(This could perhaps be compared with the science vote, which for example in
99/00 was GBP 1.5billion).
But the total excludes spend at Research Council funded institutes, and
spend by grant-holders at Universities, so is a lower limit.
To it one needs to add the OST's own spend, some of which goes to the
British Association and other national organisations. Also the Government's
Department of Trade & Industry's Engineering policy unit is involved in
certain promotion schemes. So it's a complicated story.

Does anyone know how much money will be spend this year (or has been spend
last year) in the UK on Public understanding of science (science
communication)? This would include expenditures of e.g. the Nuffield
foundation, the Wellcome Trust, the UK Government, etc.
Thank you in advance!
