Dick,
Not being careful and not wishing to sound 'thick', but isn't the whole basis of
design - about a preferred view and personal preference?
Is design (and successful design particularly), largely subjective in nature?
(if not we need that repeatable formula now).
And in expanding design to cover all acts of creation, as in "what human's do in
modifying ..." we are stepping over areas that were/are of artisanal expertise
and in many ways still mutually exclusive.
Design cannot take art, craftsmanship and engineering (to name but a few) under
its wing. An analogy would be speaking several languages and all of them
inadequately.
A three year undergrad course cannot replace true apprenticeship in a subject.
If this is true for the professional qualification of 'designer', then design as
a profession/subject cannot lay claim to those areas of expertise that take a
lifetime to learn.
However we can 'study' the design process.... heck, the word still defies its
own meaning.
Maybe it deserves being quarantined in New Zealand with those killer sheep.
IMHO
