Here, Here!
Erica and Minnie, thanks for the breath of fresh air!
I think anything to take the list in a new direction right now would be
quite welcomed! Not to mention, though well articulated, the threads of
late have reminded me more of my high school gym, than of a serious
study of cinema and film. However, I digress. I would be curious to know
if anyone sees a continuing rejection of modern western philosophic
ideals in short and even feature length films, for a more eastern
approach? I am referring mostly to films made in the west, (my regards
to Minnie, but for good or bad I am a creature of the west. However, I
agree with you quite strongly, and would like also to see filmmakers
like Satyajit Ray, Majid Majidi, and especially Michael Raeburn
discussed more in their philosophical and cinematic context on this
list. There, truly, is fruit ripe for the picking!) Is this current
trend away from these ideals indicative of our place and time? Does it
imply a certain capitalist association in thought and culture? Is it
simply a reaction in the west to continuing academic debate and even
conversations like the ones we have been recently having? Or is there
something more true, in the ideals of eastern philosophy that is tapping
into a growing number of persons in the west?
Broad and General questions, I know, but hoping to get things started in
another direction......
