I didn't contribute to the recent, now slightly soured, discussion of
postmodernism, so participants may feel I shouldn't comment, but that's too
bad.
This time last year this list had a very similar discussion, on exactly the
same topic - too much too fast, in the end degenerating into irritation,
personal animus and alienation. As someone commented early on, it's obvious
that this rush of stuff happens round about now because suddenly some people
have more time. But it does result in 1) an unmanageable cascade which is
hard for anyone with anything else to do to assimilate [and therefore even
think of contributing to] 2)] an intensely 'ad hominem' approach which
people obviously find exclusive and even exclusionary.
This is a great list, but it would be even better if contributions were
produced in a less, er, *postmodern* way... Last time this kind of thing
happened the list slumped for months, and that was a shame.
