Dear All
Seeing how illegible the signatures of most doctors are, how will the lab know?

Subject: Gordon's Theme
To change tack slightly, but still continuing with "Gordon's Theme". This relates to a memo I received today (sent, not leaked).
We have established that most subscribers to this mailbase think that only medically qualified staff, directly responsible for the patient, should give results and interpretation to patients. Ok, but.....
What then is the position where a non-medically qualified member of staff such as an "Independent Nurse Practioner" (INP) wishes to request Biochemistry on his/her own initiative and is not under the supervision of a medically-qualified consultant or GP. Presumably this non-medical INP will discuss the results with the patient and offer an interpretation! Should we accept all requests from INPs? Or should we limit the requests to tests he/she knows about? (which of course begs another question).
P.S. Do Heads of department (or CPA) think that a Clinical Biochemistry Department should only accept requests that have been signed by a medically qualified doctor?
