Dear Colleagues
We have a young male head injury patient with a good output of normal
looking urine which was noticed to darken in the catheter bag after an hour
or two. He doesn't seem to be on any unusual drugs. The colour is
brown/black and not surprisingly screen for PBG was negative. We want to
exclude homogentisic acid (HGA) but having chucked out most of our historic
chemical collection Tietz recipes aren't of immediate use. Nobody on
AssayFinder or in British Inherited Metabolic Disease Group admits to
offering HGA. Any suggestions on making a positive ID on this pigment would
be most welcome.
