This half day course aims to aid social researchers who wish to use
secondary data sets produced by large survey organisations in their
research, but are unsure of where to begin, or exactly what is
available to them. The course will include the following, spread
between classes and a session of practical work on computers.
* Why researchers may want to use secondary data.
* What data is available to them.
* How to get hold of the data.
* An introduction to the new ESDS data service.
* Overview of support organisations, such as the Office
for
National Statistics and the Question bank.
Lecturer: Julie Lamb is the Question bank Content Manager and
Research
Fellow in the Department of Sociology, University of Surrey.
Fee: £50 (includes course materials, and afternoon tea). Because of
ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available which reduce the fee
to £15 - applicants must be full-time students, UK academic staff or
ESRC-funded researchers.
