Dear All
Ray still doesn't get it.
>C Wright-Mills, a sociologist ... used the phrase
>'cheerful robot' to apply to those who confused their worldly success with
>the morality of what they were doing.
Confusion there may be, but not at my end. Imagine that you had a 'calling'
to represent God, and that God supported you. I suggest to you that you would
still need to be ordained in order to do God's work effectively. Hence in
order to to 'do' the moral thing, you would need the 'badge' of God's
professionals. You would need to become a Priest, Rabbi, Vicar, whatever. I
suggest that this does not signify 'success' just the legitimate authority
(see another sociologist - Max Weber) to act morally.
>That is a problem for society and for government statisticians who don't get
>the support from the statistics profession
Hang on, you see the need for a 'statistics profession' then? Why not a
properly accredited one?
>Remember what Sir Claus Moser said in his Presidential address "We know how
>people move away from us at parties
Funnily enough I don't have that problem. But this effect has more to do with
the generally less than user-friendly culture that has dominated the
profession.
