Apologies for not making my question clearer, even though it has raised a
subject for discussion. The employee I am referring to is not acutually a
counsellor but works within the counselling service, therfore I have
suggested that it is not appropriate for this person to be seen by their
colleagues, and in this situation would it be expected for the employer to
provide external counselling?

I have been in OH for years and in all that time only one employer has ever
raised the question of this type of supervisison. A couple of years ago a
senior manager here at HMPS spent about an hour with a traumatised prison
officer to discuss the way forward. He came to me and said that he was
"blown away" by the emotional intensity of the meeting and couldnt believe
that I did that kind of thing all day with no recourse to any kind of
psychological support and said if I ever needed anything he would support
it.
Question - many of us deal with mental health issues, have done CBT skills
for OH practitioners, may have counselling qualifications tec.
Should we be looking at this as a professional body? Do CPNs RMNs have this
kind of support? Within my organisation all psychologists, drug workers,
offending behaviour tutors, sex offender treatment programmes facilitataors
etc all get supervision - unless i source it myself (which I do) I would get
nowt but am often on the sharp end. What about OHA`s within Fire and
rescue/Police?

I agree with Sharon with respects to this that is the employers duty to
ensure supervision fulfils the role of debriefing and support dependent on
the issue if it relates to their practice and not something entirely
different and unrelated.
Interestingly Sharon raised this with respects to OHAs and I agree mentoring
supports this to an extent. Having worked in the past in an NICU support
was difficult to access in this acute area and it is often expected that
nurses in general "detach" which as you all know isnt true. I have tried to
look at research with regards to this and relationships with PTSD and nurses
exposure to trauma and there is very little available though I am sure in my
opinion would not be small in numbers
