medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. January) is the feast day of:
Gregory of Langres (d. 539) We know about this St. Gregory thanks to
his great-grandson, Gregory of Tours. Greg the Latter tells that
today's saint spent 40 years as governor of the Autun region before
giving it all up in favor of clerical life. He became bishop of
Langres.
Angela of Foligno (blessed) (d. 1309) Angela was a wealthy wife and
mother of Foligno (near Assisi). In c. 1285 she had a vision and
totally transformed her life. She became a Franciscan tertiary and
renounced every pleasure of her earlier life, aided by the successive
deaths of her mother, husband, and sons. A. gathered a circle of
tertiaries around her and spent the rest of her life in poverty and
mystical experience. Her cult was confirmed in 1693.
