medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. January) is the feast day of:
Cyrus and John (d. c. 303) Cyrus and John were part of that "good
physician" subset of saints---doctors who refused to take fees.
Cyril of Alexandria tells their story, explaining that Cyrus was from
Alexandria and John was an Arabian. They were arrested, tortured,
and beheaded. Cyril moved some of their relics to Menuithi (Abukir)
in Egypt a century later, to counter the cult of Isis there. Their
own shrine became a major pilgrimage attraction.
Marcella (d. 410) Another of Jerome's devotees, the recipient of 16
of his letters. Marcella was a noble Roman widow who became an
ascetic under Jerome's direction. When the Goths overran Rome they
ill-used her to try to get her to reveal the location of treasure,
and she died soon afterward (although the Roman Martyrology
celebrates her today rather than August, when the sack of Rome
happened).
Maedoc of Ferns (d. c. 626) Maedoc (or Aidan) was a native of
Connacht. Legend tells that he was educated by St. DAvid in Wales,
then returned to Ireland and founded a monastery at Ferns (and
several other communities, too).
Adamnan of Coldingham (d. c. 680) Adamnan was a monk of Irish
descent at Coldingham (about 10 miles north of Berwick upon Tweed).
Bede tells that A. was a visionary
Eusebius of St. Gall (d. 884) Eusebius was an Irish monk who settled
at St. Gall. He became a hermit nearby, living on Mt. St. Victor for
30 years. He met his end when he rebuked a peasant for his godless
life---and the peasant resented his remarks with a scythe.
