medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
There is a huge literature on royal saints. Perhaps most pertinently for
this list, Susan Ridyard has published a book on Royal Saints in
Anglo-Saxon England, Cambridge, 1988. See also David Rollason, "The Cult
of Murdered Royal Saints in Anglo-Saxon England", in Anglo-Saxon England
11, 1983, 1-22 . For my two cents worth on the topic, "Murder and
Martyrs in Anglo-Saxon England" in Sacrificing the Self (Oxford, 2002)
pp. 58-77.
BTW, in the latter two "murdered" excludes saints who died fighting
pagans or the like - the issue in all 3 works is what political or
ideological factors led to translation and veneration as a saint. As
to my Scottish namesake, who is not included in any of the above, my
guess is that she was your basic religious queen who founded churches,
was concerned for the poor, etc. That said, as the three preceding
references show, sanctification invariably involves factors other than
holiness of life or death.

I have often wondered why such persons as Edmund King and Martyr and
Margaret of Scotland are numbered with the Saints.
