medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear list members,
I'm about to launch into a discussion of the development of the concept
of Purgatory in the west, and have a few queries.
Does anyone know of equivalents to Dante from the orthodox tradition
(Greek or Slavic) from the 12th-14th centuries?
I'd be especially interested discussions of different levels of heavens,
I would have thought there would be Greek literature discussing
seven heavens and the like, but am completely ignorant in this area.
Looking forward to the Reformation, I have always assumed that in the
Protestant traditions there were one heaven and one hell as well as,
obviously, no purgatory. However it did occur to me that there might
have been protestant intellectuals who carried on with multiple heavens
for a while. Any thoughts on this?
Meg
