We got the filters from our handling collection gas masks totally removed.
They were sealed units, so they couldn't, according to our local asbestos
firm (see yellow pages or ask your local authority H&S department for
contacts) be emptied and refitted to the masks. We now have a set of masks
without filters and are looking at safe modern replacement filters or faking
up with baked bean cans (or something safe). Make sure you get a safety
certificate from the firm doing the removals to say your masks are now
totally asbestos free and safe to use. We are still waiting for ours....
Kate
Our accessioned collection gas masks have been sealed up in bags until we
find someone who can empty them without totally destroying the filter part
of the mask.

Subject: Asbestos in gas masks
Hello to everyone out there
Apologies for cross posting.
Does anyone have a definitive list which they can provide regarding which
WW2 gas masks contain asbestos, and those which don't?
Also, does anybody know of companies in Britain who can remove asbestos
from
gas masks?
Many thanks
