The University of the Third Age (U3A) consists of self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning, not for qualifications, but for enjoyment and the love of learning. Membership benefits include valuable opportunity for social engagement at a time of life when people can become isolated, the negative effects of which are well known. The U3A also aspires to work in partnership with other research and learning organisations. Activities includes collaboration in research, support for students from the local community and opportunities to share resources and learning opportunities.
