Dear all
I have been asked by Emma Taylor of MGC to circulate this consultancy,
with an Invitation for tenders by 20th August. It would be helpful to
have a CV with brief statement of how consultants would approach the
project and the rates that they would charge.
Please contact Emma Taylor, Museums Officer at MGC, on 0171 233 4200 or
e-mail [log in to unmask] to discuss the project in more detail.

Brief for a project development consultancy to assist in the realisation
of the MGC's Cornucopia Project.
Background
The MGC is developing Cornucopia, a database of UK museum collections
which will provide an overview of the wealth of collections held by UK
museums. The database will use current and newly commissioned research
and will be available at www.cornucopia.org.uk.
MGC has recently launched a pilot version of Cornucopia using data about
the Designated collections in England. The development of the pilot has
informed our thinking about the full UK Cornucopia, which will be
launched in the summer of 2000 with basic collections information on all
UK Registered museums.
MGC is looking for a consultant with a knowledge of museums and a range
of digital information management skills to assist in the development of
Cornucopia. The consultant will play a key role in the development of
the data standards and survey process which are critical to the success
of the project.
Aims of the project
The consultant will be expected to :
* carry out a focussed summative evaluation of the Cornucopia
pilot and formative evaluation of preliminary ideas for the main project
with a range of users and potential users.
* co-ordinate the development of the data structure for
Cornucopia, in liaison with the Museums Officer and New Technologies
Adviser at MGC, and with mda and other organisations and individuals
developing terminology for the project (e.g. EH/RCHME, Fenscore)
* develop a manual for the process of gathering the new
information required for Cornucopia.
* develop a brief for use in the procurement process to select a
database company to develop Cornucopia.
* co-ordinate the first part of the survey process.
Timescale
The project should be completed between September 1999 and the end of
February 2000. We would hope to begin the survey process in December
1999/ January 2000.
Deliverables
1. Evaluation report
2. Report explaining the agreed data structure for Cornucopia
3. Manual for the Cornucopia survey process
4. Brief for the development of the Cornucopia database
5. The consultant will also be expected to contribute to the
successful launch of the survey process by early 2000
Fee
To be negotiated. Minimal expenses for travelling, telephoning and
postage will be paid, but must be negotiated in advance with MGC.
