A query for you specialists of Carolingian thought:
I'm attempting to trace the idea, apparently common in Carolingian times
and perhaps even earlier, that royal and epispocal authority are
comparable and can thus serve as models (in some repsects) for each other.
I'm well aware that the key text here is Gregory's _Pastoral Care_ and its
treatment of the "rector", for Gregory primarily a bishop, but later
understood as meaning secular authorities too. I've found a bit of
discussion about this in Wallace-Hadrill's _Early Germanic Kingship in
Englnd and the Continent_ and in R.A. Markus's article "Gregory the
Great's Rector and his Genesis", but am having trouble turning up a more
detailed discussion. I'd also be interested to know of any
primary source which treat this issue, e.g., in Smaragdus, Hincmar,
Sedulius Scotus or other Carolingian writers. I'm reading Hincmar's _De
ordine palatii_ right now and so far no luck.
Thanks as always,
Scott
