I must have misstated myself on one important point: it is Dominic who is
depicted as presiding at an auto-da-fe. The artist is Pedro Berruguete,
and a plate can be found in vol. 13 of the Encyclopedia of World Art [no.
129]. There also is a depiction of Dominic presiding at a burning of
heretical books. Neither motiff shows up in any earlier Dominicanart seen
by me, including small panels on Dominican altarpieces. Dominic usually
is shown in less commanding roles, clinging - for example - to the cross
or - in narratives - competing in a trial by fire in which heretical books
committed to the flames burn while Dominic's books survive. If anyone has
encountered an earlier example of Berruguete's themes, I would like to
hear about them. (Also, I would like to know of any depictings of
Reginald of Orleans OP outside of Bologna.)
