Reply to: RE mysterious staircases in English churches
Dear Graham and George,
In reply to Graham's query re drama & rood screens in Italian churches, the
quick answer is yes. My colleague Nerida Newbigin in the Italian Dept here at
Sydney University has been working for a number of years on the records of
religious plays put on Florentine confraternities in the 14th & 15thc. These
were staged once a year on the occasion of the relevant feast (Assumption,
Pentecost, etc) in the church where the confraternity had their chapel (I
think her examples are for S. Spirito and/or S. Maria del Carmine) and the
rood screen was used extensively as locale for some or all of the action, eg I
think for the house at Pentecost, etc. She has published articles on this
material in *Christianity in the Renaissance*, ed by T. Verdon & J. Henderson,
Syracuse UP Press, & I think also in Eisenbichler, K., ed. Crossing the
Boundaries. Christian Piety and the Arts in Italian Medieval and Renaissance
Confraternities. Early Drama, Art, and Music Monograph Series, 15. Kalmazoo:
Medieval Institute Publications, Western Michigan University, 1991.
With best wishes,
Louise Marshall, Dept. of Fine Arts, Univ. of Sydney
