Subject: Re: GEM job ad: Learning & Engagement Officer - Thackray Medical Museum

Thanks so much for all your messages and comments following my original post expressing concerns about the requirements of an advert for a Learning Officer that they are able to climb stairs. I genuinely value all the input while feeling I ought to be able to express my own views. Thanks in particular to those who have responded to me privately, feeling unable to do so on the list, raising similar concerns. The list clearly isn't a safe space for everyone. It isn't a safe space for me.

Just for clarity, I did approach the person concerned privately with a suggestion as to where they might go to get advice on making the post and work accessible to a wheelchair user. On this list, a disabled artist also had some very good suggestions. The immediate reply was it could not be done. This list was also told 'the Emergency Museum is a converted Ambulance. It's is not physically possible to access the vehicle’ with further details of its inaccessibility given to me in a private email. This directly contradicts Charlotte's recent really helpful and positive comments.

But this isn’t about an individual case. It’s about something much bigger.

It’s about how to respond when someone, whoever that might be, challenges museums on access and inclusion. And how not to be defensive when your inability to provide a fully accessible service is questioned.

For 20 years it has very rare for my family, which includes a wheelchair user, to be able to access museum activities. I had hoped this was changing.

I’d hoped that it would be unthinkable, today, for an activity to be designed from scratch that wasn’t accessible to disabled people both as users and providers. To discover this wasn’t the case was, quite naturally, upsetting.

Lived experience, in all its diversity, needs to be recognised as a skill and expertise. (Wouldn’t it be wonderful if job specs asked for this.) It brings perspective and insights, and builds organisational confidence. As Rosie pointed out, if the decision makers and designers were more diverse, inclusion would be built in to projects from the start. The last 20 years has seen numerous, often well funded, initiatives to diversify the museum workforce. None of these have worked. There are pockets of excellent provocative, pioneering and imaginative practice. But in some places, it’s not getting better, but worse.

Most upsetting of all is a lack of a sense of urgency in the museum sector as a whole about this. We talk about climate emergency, and a need for immediate action, but there is also a museum emergency. To stay relevant and thrive, the sector needs to stop promising to become more diverse and start changing. It’s no good to say that in a few years time, next year, or in October we’ll get it fixed. Now would be too late.

And if the GEM list is to be anything more than enquires about where to source a Gimson candle sconce (while recognising this is a really valuable service), it has to be open to vigorous discussion and, most importantly, alternative voices and perspectives about how (and even when) this change happens.

However, due to the feeling on this list and the moderator’s comments, it’s clear it is best for me to unsubscribe. That means I won’t see any of the replies to this message, which, to be honest, is a relief. Please continue debating.

Here’s to change.

Hi All,

I work on the Emergency Museum and am currently carrying out the work that this new role will cover.

I am so passionate about widening access to museums and that is why I am proud to be involved in this project.

The emergency museum exists to take out objects and programmes to people who might not be able to visit the museum site. This includes settings including schools, nursing homes, residential homes specifically for people with physical disabilities, festivals, events for refugees, support groups, basically, wherever there is room for us, we have been, for free, to share our collection and learning activities.

The emergency museum also exists to collect the stories and input from every type of person we meet, which all goes into ensuring that our museum refurb results in the most accessible and representative spaces we can create. When the newly refurbished museum reopens in the summer, you will see evidence of these conversations in every gallery.

Visitors who use wheelchairs can get into the emergency museum and we considered all the barriers to access we could think of when we designed it, physical, sensory, language, cultural, etc etc - as heritage professionals I know you you all about this stuff too. We're not perfect but we are working really hard and learning all the time.

The job we are advertising is not glamorous. It involves moving heavy boxes of resources, through a museum which is essentially a building site on a daily basis. I know first hand that it wouldn't be fair to offer this to someone who couldn't do this safely and we cannot change the circumstances we are in right now. If physical work was a smaller part of the role, we could perhaps support the candidate with this aspect, but the job IS to carry things, erect a huge gazebo, help toddlers up steps into a vehicle and lots of moving around various off-road terrain. We have volunteers with differing abilities who help to deliver the emergency museum activities, all of whom would agree that the advertised role carries certain physical demands. So, unfortunately some (by no means all) disabled people will not be able to apply for the job.

There is a lot of work to be done across the heritage industry to increase diversity in the workforce. I think that progress will happen faster if we work together and have productive, listening conversations. GEM can be a great way to help this happen if we all use it wisely and support one another.

Hello,

I can’t say I contribute to the list much- and when I do its usually to an individual. However, as a staff member with particular responsibilities around access I have to say that I think Rosie’s response is brilliant – non-defensive – and why not when we are all working towards equal access and sometimes we all get it wrong (or at least, a little mistaken).

Dea did well to raise the point, and Rosie to engage with it steadily.

Wishing everyone a good week,

Hey everyone,

I think this platform has a few very active members with lots to say. I get that an email which might seem pithy or a hot take to the person sending the email might cause professional anxiety to the person on the receiving end.

However, as people who work with the public I also think it’s important to occasionally sit with the discomfort of what we do, and how the choices that we make sometimes marginalise people. I am sure will be people on this list who have mobility impairments that are not able to access work and learning opportunities because of choices that we ourselves have made in planning, and it’s important to listen to their voices when we have made choices that contribute to their continued marginalisation.

Yes, it’s uncomfortable to be called out when we’ve made what we think of as an oversight in planning, but receiving an email that challenges you is nowhere near as uncomfortable it is to be systematically excluded because of those oversights. It always much nicer to be challenged constructively and in private but sometimes frustration wins and it isn’t a personal attack, it comes from a desire for us all to do better.

I think what this highlights to me most is that we *need* to make our sector more accessible for disabled people so that they can be round the table when these organisational decisions are made in the first place.

Best,

Rosie

Hello everyone,

We all work in this industry, and in learning, because we care about people’s access to great inspiring experiences, places and opportunities.

This GEM Jiscmail is supposed to be a supportive platform. Instead, it often is used in a very public and negative way that I don’t think is actually that far from bullying.

Sometimes people get things wrong, or say the wrong thing, and it perhaps needs to be called out, but there’s no need for the whole GEM list to be copied in.

As a note, I’ve been a member of this list for years, but I don’t dare post on it in case I end up at the centre of a negative pile-on. Last week, I did for the first time, and I was honestly scared of what responses I would get.

I checked the wording of my email at least 5 times.

Let’s all be nicer to each other! We do amazing jobs, and make a difference to people every day!

Peace and love J

Just a footnote. This isn’t a ‘fitness’ requirement. A Paralympic athlete is fit. It is a requirement not to be disabled.

Thanks
