Hi Don,

I worked on a project where some shells of rare mussels were cast and replicas then made and used as a handling part of an exhibition. They were amazingly real looking - the company (WorkHaus) did a great job and the original mussel shells were very carefully handled and were not affected by the casting process. Everyone was very pleased with the results.

Hope that helps and all is good with you :)

Best,

Izzy

Morning everyone,

A question on behalf of one our Masters students. Has anyone produced copies of rare/special artefacts for use as a handling item using a mould and then a cast replica from the mould?

All the best,

Don

Hi Don,

I haven't yet copied a rare / special artefact by taking a mould and casting it. But have 3D printed an object of my own design, 3D printed it then took a silicon mold and cast it in resin. For any object that has been 3D scanned the process of 3D print, mould and cast would be the same. Happy to answer any questions you may have on the process and materials involved.

GEM Foundation Course: Museum Learning 2018 April - July 2018, Manchester

Are you new to the museum and heritage learning sector? Are you looking to increase your skills, understanding and confidence in your role? If so, then this course is for you!

        [cid:image003.png@01D3B53F.23076290]

What will I gain?

The course will provide you with opportunities to develop, practise and demonstrate the basic skills and knowledge needed to be a heritage educator. Six days of formal training, site visits and activities will guide you towards completing a work-based assignment that will benefit not only you but your organisation too. You'll be supported by an experienced course director, a group of like-minded peers, and a professional mentor within the sector.

"I have managed to put so many of the great ideas the course gave me into action and lots more to come over the next few months."

Who is it for?

GEM's foundation course is intended for those in their first year or so of their museum education career; or for those working in a different part of the heritage sector but wishing to take up an education position. Since it is a work-based course, it is a requirement that applicants should be working or volunteering in the heritage sector.

When & where is it?

The course is spread over a four-month period from April to July 2018. There are six full days of seminars, workshops and site visits, and participants then complete a work-based assignment, which should be completed a month after the last on-site course day.

Participants should be able to attend the following on-site course days:

23-24 April, 21-22 May 2018, and 18-19 June 2018.

"I really enjoyed the range of site visits, it was great to see how many different styles of learning there are in just one city's worth of museums."

Who runs the course?

Pete Brown, the course director, is a museum learning professional with over 20 years' experience, including responsibility for CPD and organisational development at senior management level and for devising and running training courses for learning, curatorial and visitor services staff.

How much does it cost?

The course costs £650 to attend, which includes tuition spread over a four-month period, course materials, refreshments during seminars and workshops, and guidance from a mentor. You'll need to be a personal member of GEM to attend the course. However, organisations that are institutional GEM members can receive complimentary personal memberships for up to two employees or volunteers that attend the course.

How do I apply?

Please read our FAQs<http://www.gem.org.uk/downloads/gem_fc_2018_Man_faqs.pdf> before filling in and sending your course application form<http://www.gem.org.uk/downloads/gem_fc_2018_Man_app.pdf>.

The application deadline is Friday 13 April 2018.

Subject: Re: making replicas

Hi Don

Techniques for casting replicas of museum objects from moulds taken from an original are, I think quite well known. The usual process, these days, uses a cold-cure silicone rubber to make the mould, which may have to be formed in several interlocking pieces. Once the original has been removed the mould is reassembled and something like plaster of paris or a casting-grade polyester resin (itself filled with slate dust or similar) is poured in and allowed to cure. All being well this should result in a perfect facsimile of the original object being produce. The like ness can be further enhanced by surface finishing processes such as painting, staining, patination or polishing as necessary. Metallic finished can be produced by using resins filled with metal powders rather than slate dust. These are normally poured into the mould and spread around the inside to form a ‘gel coat’ which is allowed to cure before the bulk of the mould is filled with a cheaper mineral filled resin.

It is also possible to produce metal replicas of meta originals by the electroforming process. Here a mould is taken from the original in a material which conducts electricity or which will support a conductive coating. The mould is then used as the cathode in an electroplating bath and over several hours a copy of the surface of original object, in metal, slowly builds up on the mould.

Museum and archaeological conservators know all about these techniques, and you colleagues in that discipline ought to be able to advise. Like all such processes a brief description make it sound easy. In practise it is not, and care has to be taken (for example) to ensure that the moulding rubber chosen will not damage the original object, and that all the air is removed from both the moulding rubber and casting resins before use. For this reason rubbers and resins are often prepared in a vacuum chamber, and the moulding and casting processes may also be done under vacuum.

Hope this helps

All the best

Richard.

Subject: SCHOOLS PRIZE FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY

Hello all

In time for International Women's Month, the Women's History Network is launching a new School's Prize for a Women's History Display in a school or college.

Taking the 2018 theme, #PressforProgress, we invite pupils or students to create a display to celebrate women who worked to #*PressforProgress* <https://twitter.com/hashtag/PressforProgress?src=hash> - it can be any women, in any field - local heroines or international figures - the choice is up to you!

The prize is £50 for the class and a signed copy of *A History or Women in

100 Objects* by Maggie Andrews & Janis Lomas.

Details of how to apply are attached or can be found at http:// womenshistorynetwork.org <https://t.co/4ffi7H0QyQ>.

Deadline is 1 May 2018.

Please forward to teachers and friends in schools and colleges.

Yours
