Hi all,
The Trust's Historic Environment Group is looking for new members, so I thought I'd post the ad here in case it is of interest to anyone. The role is voluntary, but expenses are covered.

Volunteer as a member of the National Trust’s Historic Environment Advisory Group
The National Trust is a successful and growing conservation charity with 5 million members and is one of the UK’s leading heritage organisations. The Trust owns over 28,000 buildings, 200 historic gardens, 100 landscape parks, and 250,000 hectares of land in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Trust is in an ambitious new phase of its history. Our ten-year strategy commits us to change on many fronts, including the way we present, interpret and open up our properties to the public. It will be a huge challenge to realise the kind of transformation we aspire to, while maintaining the highest standards of conservation, and commissioning great new design.
We are looking for new members to join the Historic Environment Advisory Group, to share their unique expertise and act as critical friends. The Historic Environment Group is one of four voluntary Advisory Groups in the Trust. The other groups are: Commercial, Natural Environment, and Collections and Interpretation which together cover the areas where external volunteer advice is greatly valued. These groups are highly respected professionals who give their time, both as individuals on site, and working as a group at bi-annual meetings, to advise on practical, reputational and policy issues. Members of the Historic Environment Advisory Group focus on all aspects of the estate, rural or urban, and encompassing built or natural assets. These include buildings, monuments, archaeological material, historic aspects of landscapes; parks, gardens and plant collections.
We are looking for four new members whose expertise and interests cover one or more of the following areas:
- Archaeology particularly practitioners with strong connections to other national or international partner organisations in the heritage field , perhaps with experience of managing research strategies and programmes or who has strong research experience in a field relevant to the work of the Trust.
- Major Infrastructure with a deep understanding of how major infrastructure proposals are evaluated and approved, their engineering and potential impact on (and mitigation of) the historic and special natural environments.
- Landscapes with particular skills in understanding cultural landscapes at a macro scale and experience of evaluating the impacts of large-scale proposals affecting landscapes.
- Vernacular Buildings with skills and experience of evaluating proposals for the adaptation of vernacular buildings and the ability to consider potential impact on both the significance of the building and its setting.
We are looking for colleagues who have a passion and extensive knowledge in these areas, who possess a curious mind, and a collegiate outlook. Experience producing or working with academic research would also be beneficial but is not essential. The role requires a commitment of up to fifteen days a year, and is for an initial term of three years with the potential for the term to be renewed. As mentioned, the Advisory Groups each meet twice per year with an Advisory Groups Conference for all groups in the summer. Further to this, members are sometimes invited to attend property visits to provide advice on specific projects. The positions are voluntary, but expenses are paid.
Applicants must submit a short CV and a covering letter expressing why they feel motivated to join the Group.
