HI Bea,
(Another non-teacher in a senior learning role here...)
Probably answering this too late, but I wouldn't let it put me off.
As a recruiting manager, it's these points where I like to add the words 'equivalent qualification or (significant) relevant experience'. When sifting applications I'm also much more interested in reading about experience over qualifications, whether that be classroom teaching or in an informal setting. In sifting applications (we use a competency based process), our process is to mark 0-3 against every competency listed, so I would never be able to discount someone based on one criteria. You recruit against the whole JD, not just one aspect of it.

Hello Gemmers
I know this is a very old chestnut but I pick your brains with specific reference to the recent National Gallery job ads published - the Schools/Teacher Programmer and Assistant Programmer jobs require a qualified teacher as 'essential' and 'desirable' respectively. I am not one, but have been working in museum/gallery learning for over ten years and have held a schools officer role in a prestigious art gallery. There is no 'to have a brief chat about this role please contact xxx' on their website - and the generic HR helpline rings out.
So...what do/would you other unqualified LOs do? Put in an application with a glaring hole where the 'teacher' bit is, or not waste your time safe in the knowledge your application won't make it past the sift?
Genuine question - and interested in answers as I'll have to do the app this weekend if I am to apply!!
Thank you
Bea
