Dear Di,
I am currently (re) creating something that might be prefect for you,
which we call our chest of wonders. It's basically a chest of drawers,
where each draw is filled with objects from different periods, so you
can get a sense of time and depth. We use it at outreach events for the
University but I'm also going to use it with primary schools.
For a more hands on experience and archaeological excavation in a raised
bed, that sounds like something that is certainly do able. Of course
they potentially wouldn't find much, or see much stratigraphy, unless
you seeded the ground with objects.
Access Cambridge Archaeology run a programme of excavations and
university experience throughout the summer specifically for raising
aspirations with teenagers. So I can certainly offer advise about how to
run a dig. More details about our programme can be found here:
http://www.access.arch.cam.ac.uk/schools/hefa. My contact details are
below, and I'm happy to talk through more about what we do. If you would
be interested in using some of our recording materials that can be
arranged in return for a copyright fee.
Best,
Emily

I have been in discussions as to how our museum can support learning for lower ability children and the idea of taking part in a dig came up. We discussed how we would need to make sure that the children understood that this was only to give them an idea of what an actual dig would be like, we have volunteers who have been involved in digs in the past and some keen amateur archaeologists who would like to help out.
