So let's forget the problems of the word "design" for a moment and just deal with "engineering."
Imagine a magazine called, say, "21st Century Engineering." They are having a reader-judged contest titled "Best Engineering of 2015." Since they don't want non-experts weighing in based on non-engineering criteria, they have a little qualification survey.
The first question is about how long you've been a professional engineer. The second is about specialties. It asks how much time of your time is spent in different roles; the choices are things like "studio board," "tuning," and "remix." The next asks about tie spent with various tools; the list is stuff like "Pro Tools."
Who would respond to this by saying "I am and engineer and they are leaving me out. How can they even call themselves engineers? I bet none of these punks have come anywhere close to driving a railroad train. When you Google railroad engineer, you get over seven million results and 'Pro Tools' isn't on any of them"?
It's obviously about sound recording. If you confronted them, I would expect that "Get a life" might be high on the expected list of replies.
