Dear Pedro Oliveira, Mahmoud Keshavarz, Danah Abdulla, Ece Canli, Matt
Kiem, Tristan Schultz and Luiza Prado
Thank you very much for setting up this inquiry.
From the third month of my study in design school (1985) I realized
the deep damage that design, architectural and art education is doing
in India (I suppose this is the case with all non western countries)
I have been exploring its impact since then. I have written about
this journey- how the non literate artisans and children helped me to
address this at the link

What is wrong with design education in the Indian context

Unfortunately hardly any work is happening in any institutions in
India to address this. in fact we are celebrating our colonization/
mediocrity in every possible way, even more by collaborating with
western institutions for degree. (many private design schools are
doing this- selling of souls, just for the sake of making bit more
money). The whole syllabus is designed in the west, assessment by the
west and the final degree from the west. I cant believe from where
this urge for self humiliation and to demeaning oneself.
I helped to organize a conference in january 2015 to address this at
NIT, Calicut called 'Thanima' meaning original, to initiate developing
courses that awaken ones contextually rooted aesthetic sensibility
rather than getting conditioned by the western aesthetic sensibility.
Re thinking foundation is an attempt to initiate research into
developing courses that are culturally rooted and ecologically
sensitive. http://rethinkingfoundation.weebly.com/
I hope other members of the group will appreciate what i am attempting
to explore with in my own cultural context while keeping deep respect
for the authentic work that the Bauhaus, William Morris etc initiated
in the western context and its continued exploration.
But it is important to HELP in keeping alive the 'other' as if the
other disappears there will be possibility of self reflection and self
correction.
