Today Pedro Oliveira, Mahmoud Keshavarz, Danah Abdulla, Ece Canli, Matt Kiem, Tristan Schultz and I are proud to announce the launch of the Decolonising Design <http://www.decolonisingdesign.com/> platform.
This platform is our response to an almost complete failure, in the field of design studies, to address the systemic problems emerging from the colonial conditions that inform knowledge production and validation. It is our way to offer an alternative space for the many designers who work at the fringes, whose voices and concerns are systematically marginalised by a largely Anglocentric and Eurocentric design tradition. It is a place to discuss strategies and tactics through which to engage with mainstream discourse, and to postulate alternatives and reformulations of contemporary practice. Today is also the first day of the Design Research Conference. The creation of this platform was, in part, triggered by the rejection, on clearly political grounds, of a paper five of us submitted which discussed some of these issues. For now, this platform takes the shape of a blog; we are opening it for researchers, students and practitioners from the Global South to submit their work and to use it as a space for fruitful discussion and growth.
